We Were Liars Season 2 Unveils Its CastJessie Redmond - Amazon Prime (Jessie Redmond - Amazon Prime)

Spoilers below.

Of all the lies in the Prime Video adaptation of E. Lockhart’s 2014 novel We Were Liars, the most shocking is the one Cadence Sinclair tells herself. The teenage protagonist of the drama series finally realizes at the end of season 1 that she’s been in denial for months. Although Cady (Emily Alyn Lind) has spent time with them every day for weeks, her beloved Sinclair cousins Johnny (Joseph Zada) and Mirren (Esther McGregor) are no more than apparitions. Nor is her true love, Gat (Shubham Maheshwari), really sitting by her side on the dock at Beechwood Island each morning. They all died in a horrific fire Cady helped set last summer, and she’s been lying to herself ever since. Now, only their ghosts keep her company.

By the time Cady faces this truth, she has also drummed up the courage to rebel against the elitist expectations of her family, the Sinclairs. She ends the season fleeing Beechwood Island and all the trauma it represents. But the last scene of the finale episode indicates that Beechwood Island might not be done with the Sinclairs. When Cady’s Aunt Carrie (Mamie Gummer) pauses in her kitchen, she turns around to see the ghost of her son, Johnny. She tells him that she’d thought he would have “left” by now, but he informs her, “I don’t think I can.”

With that juicy cliffhanger in mind, here’s what we know about the potential for We Were Liars season 2.

Is season 2 of We Were Liars confirmed?

Yes! Prime Video announced that We Were Liars is returning for another season.

“We loved making this show with so many spectacular humans,” showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie said in a September 2025 statement, per The Hollywood Reporter. “The fan response was truly special. There are still plenty of secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to keep digging them up.”

Lockhart also shared that Plec and MacKenzie have “big, big plans for season 2, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen—and a lot of surprises as well.”

The co-showrunners previously told The Wrap that they’ve had “endless conversations” with the streamer about season 2.

“They are very supportive and just waiting on whatever data it is these algorithmic creators need to have before they write a big check, so we’re looking forward to the data working in our favor,” Plec said.

“We are, as usual, at the mercy of the robots,” MacKenzie added.

Back in July 2025, Prime Video provided a small update in the form of an interview between Deadline and Vernon Sanders, head of TV at Prime Video. Sanders revealed that “the writers are hard at work, working on what a season 2 would be. We’ve been really excited by the results we’ve seen there, and it’s one of the shows that I hope will have some positive news to report soon. They’re hard at work in presenting us with material on a season 2, and there’s been quite a clamor from fans of that show to keep the story going. So we’ll see.”

Who is in the cast?

On May 7, Deadline revealed that Parker Lapaine (House of the Dragon), Madison Wolfe (True Detective), Peyton List (The Rookie), Josh Dallas (Manifest), Elysia Roorbach (The Pitt), and Costa D’Angelo (Tell Me Lies) will star as series regulars in the next season of We Were Liars.

What would season 2 of We Were Liars be about?

Deadline additionally confirmed that We Were Liars season 2 “draws inspiration from Family of Liars, E. Lockhart’s prequel novel to We Were Liars.”

In an interview with The Wrap, Plec shared, “The best gift that Emily Lockhart gave us as we were sitting down to write We Were Liars was she published Family of Liars, which was a prequel about the Sinclair sisters when they were teenagers. The book opens with Carrie telling the story of a very dark time and a very bad summer to her dead son.”

“We just wanted the audience to know that there’s still more story to tell, and we’re really looking forward to the opportunity to be able to do it,” she added.

Deadline noted that “Dallas and List play younger versions of patriarch Harris and matriarch Tipper, while Lapaine, Roorbach, and Wolfe portray younger versions of their daughters Carrie, Penny and Bess, respectively.” D’Angelo, meanwhile, is set to play Pfeff, a new character featured in Family of Liars.
