A new travel report is putting a spotlight on Georgia’s coastline, naming a handful of beach towns that locals say stand out along the Peach State’s relatively short stretch of shore.

According to Travel + Leisure, Georgia's coast spans just over 100 miles, but it still offers a mix of barrier islands, marsh landscapes, and laid-back beach communities that draw visitors year-round.

Here's what to know.

Which Georgia beach towns made the list?

The publication highlighted five destinations across the state:

Hudson, the Daily Money Dog, enjoys low tide on St. Simons Island, Georgia. -

Tybee Island

St. Simons Island

Jekyll Island

Sea Island

St. Marys/Cumberland Island

Each location offers something different, from lively beach scenes to quieter, more secluded escapes.

What makes Georgia's coast unique?

Unlike neighboring states with long stretches of developed beachfront, Georgia's coastline is defined by its natural features.

"If you find yourself driving up or down the coast, expect to encounter lots of salt marshes, maritime forests, and barrier islands; in fact, Georgia has 14 major barrier islands, and only four are accessible by car," Travel + Leisure wrote.

Some islands are only accessible by boat or ferry, offering a more remote experience compared to traditional beach towns.

What stood out about each destination? -

Tybee Island is often called "Savannah's beach," known for its quirky vibe, events, and easy access to the coast.

St. Simons Island blends historic landmarks with coastal scenery and well-known dining spots.

Jekyll Island stands out for its natural setting and landmarks like Driftwood Beach.

Sea Island offers a more upscale experience with luxury accommodations and private beaches.

St. Marys serves as a gateway to Cumberland Island, known for its untouched shoreline and wildlife.

The report emphasizes that while Georgia may not have as many beach towns as states like Florida or the Carolinas, its smaller coastline still delivers a wide range of experiences, from bustling beach communities to quiet, nature-focused getaways.
