On Tuesday, Dec. 23, PEOPLE can exclusively confirm that the pop megastar donated $1 million to the American Heart Association in honor of her dad Scott Swift

“Taylor Swift’s remarkable generosity will create lasting change far beyond its financial value,” said chief executive officer of the American Heart Association Nancy Brown in a statement

Taylor Swift has made a generous donation in honor of her dad Scott Swift.

PEOPLE can exclusively confirm that the pop megastar made a $1 million donation to the American Heart Association in honor of her 73-year-old father who underwent a quintuple bypass surgery earlier this year.

With her personal contribution, Taylor, 36, will help to advance ongoing scientific research, stronger prevention and treatment efforts, and expanded access to life‑saving care for every community," per a press release.

“Taylor Swift’s remarkable generosity will create lasting change far beyond its financial value,” said chief executive officer of the American Heart Association Nancy Brown in a statement. “Her family’s experience with cardiovascular disease is all too common, affecting nearly half of American adults."

She continued, "Her commitment to supporting her father will make so many others aware of the need to take their own heart health seriously, strengthen prevention efforts, and improve controllable risk factors—ultimately helping more people live longer, healthier lives."

Brown further noted that Taylor has been "long been associated with the symbol of heart hands."

"At the American Heart Association, we proudly use that same gesture to honor all who have been affected—our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, spouses and so many others," she added in a statement. "My hope is that together we can raise our collective heart hands and drive meaningful change against this disease, shaping a healthier future for generations to come."

In July, PEOPLE confirmed that Scott had quintuple bypass surgery just over one month prior and was recovering. TMZ was first to report the news at the time.

Taylor, her brother Austin and their mom Andrea — who has been married to Scott for 37 years — were with Scott during the entire surgery and recovery process.

Scott had the procedure after he went in for a check-up and his doctor noticed something that led to the operation. However, it was not the result of a heart attack.

Per the Mayo Clinic, "Coronary artery bypass surgery creates a new path for blood to go around a blocked or partially blocked artery in the heart."

During the 14-time Grammy winner's first appearance on her boyfriend Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast in August, she addressed the "really intense" surgery her dad had and noted that "it all happened really quick."

While Taylor said Scott had a "perfect EKG" every time he went to the doctor for annual physicals, a cardiac stress test revealed five blockages in his heart.

While her dad insisted both Taylor and Austin, 33, were "busy" and did not need to come down for the surgery, the "Wood" singer immediately met up with family at the hospital, and eventually moved in with him for the summer as he recovered.

Taylor recalled her dad doing a "comedy act" when he woke up from surgery.

"He was the funniest he's ever been, and he's usually really funny," she said.

When Taylor told her father he ended up having five blockages removed, Scott replied, "Well, you see, I come from a very competitive family."

For Taylor, it felt like "very parent-child reversal in a lot of ways."

"My brother and my mom and I were each taking shifts in the ICU and staying with him 24/7," she added.

Taylor further called the experience "surreal."
