Stockard Channing shared her thoughts on her famed caricature from the opening credits of the 1978 film Grease

Stockard Channing is speaking out about her famed caricature in the opening credits of Grease.In an interview with Entertainment Tonight for her new movie Practical Magic 2, the actress, 82, was asked about the fan reaction to the drawing, which many say is an unfair representation of Channing.

“I felt the same way,” she said.

“That’s even worse than I remember,” she added when shown the caricature. “Look at that.”

Channing said she’s only seen the 1978 film, which also stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, twice.

“One was at the opening Grauman’s Chinese [Theatre],” she recalled. “And I do agree that cartoon was unfortunate. It is my nightmare vision of self.”

The actress also admitted that when the movie comes on TV she doesn’t watch it. “I’m very proud of it, but I don’t watch it,” she said.

On Wednesday, Aug. 26, Channing attended the European premiere of Practical Magic 2 at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London, marking her first red carpet appearance in two years.

The outing comes just weeks after the actress opened up about her quieter life in a candid essay for The Sunday Times, published on Aug. 5. Following the 2014 death of her longtime partner, Daniel Gillham, Channing wrote that the loss changed the course of her life.

“My partner, Daniel, died in 2014 and it was more devastating than I realized; it had a lag effect,” Channing wrote. “The pattern of my life shifted, so I shifted my life from Maine.”

“I’ve lived alone since I lost Daniel and I’m happy being a recluse,” she added, explaining that she moved from New England to London alone “just before Covid.”

Channing also said the move partially coincided with the changing political climate in the U.S.

Channing is returning to one of her most recognizable roles for Practical Magic 2, reprising her part as Frances “Franny” Owens, the aunt of Sally Owens, played by Sandra Bullock, and Gillian Owens, played by Nicole Kidman.

Dianne Wiest is also returning as Aunt Jet, with Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod joining the cast.

The sequel follows the original 1998 film, which was based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name.

Practical Magic 2 premieres in theaters on Sept. 11.
