Ravioli sold at Costco is under a federal public health alert after it was found to contain an undeclared shellfish allergen, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The agency warned that certain packages of Giovanni Rana ravioli labeled as beef and burrata may actually contain shrimp-filled pasta in lobster sauce. Because shrimp and lobster are shellfish allergens not listed on the label, the product could pose a serious risk to people with allergies.

USA TODAY contacted Costco on May 5. Here's what to know about the recall.

What product has a public health alert been issued for?

The alert applies to 32-ounce plastic packages of “Giovanni Rana Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli” produced between March 10, 2026, and April 21, 2026.

The product bears the establishment number “Est. 44870” inside the USDA mark of inspection and was shipped to Costco stores in Maryland and New Jersey. Affected packages have use-by dates ranging from May 14, 2026, through June 25, 2026.

Federal officials said the issue was identified after the manufacturer reported receiving two consumer complaints that the product contained shrimp instead of the advertised beef-and-cheese filling.

No illnesses or adverse reactions have been confirmed, but federal officials advise anyone concerned about a potential reaction to contact a healthcare provider.

A formal recall was not issued because the affected products are no longer available for sale. However, the FSIS said it is concerned some packages may still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers.

What to do if you have the affected ravioli

Consumers are urged not to eat the product. Instead, throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.

Anyone with questions can contact Rana Meal Solutions' customer service. Consumers can also call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854 or submit a complaint through the agency’s online system.
