New ‘Grand Theft Auto’ footage offers fresh glimpses of fictional Florida

Somehow, a year has slipped by since Rockstar Games released an official trailer for its long-awaited, Florida-inspired “Grand Theft Auto VI.”
The game, set in the fictionalized peninsula Leonida, releases Nov. 19 after more than a decade in development. It’s forecast to sell 40 million copies and make more than $3 billion in revenue in its first year.
On Thursday, a 20-minute clip officially revealing gameplay for the first time arrived for streaming on Netflix. At 9 p.m., the clip becomes free to watch on Rockstar’s YouTube channel.

The “extended look” follows protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos navigating a tense entry into a drug house for a deal that devolves into an all-out shootout and escape through a window — a cinematic, high-definition opening that would look at home in any Hollywood crime thriller.

Vice City, modeled after Miami, will feature as the most prominent setting in the game, but there have been rumors that a version of Tampa, or at least parts of Tampa, could be feature in the game’s open world map. Another rumor, fueled by leaks of game footage, is that weather events such as hurricanes could be part of the gameplay as well.
While the extended look provided plenty more Florida-esque scenes of sunshine-bathed mayhem, from car chases over palm-lined bridges to backyard wrestling matches, and plenty of familiar-feeling backdrops — rooftop bars, pink-stuccoed apartment buildings and gun stores with giant, bald eagle murals painted on the side — it seems we’ll be waiting until November to know if Tampa is represented somehow.
The clip did reveal footage of several playable activities, including beer drinking, scuba diving, fishing, air-boating, lifting weights and playing basketball.
