On August 26, Miley Cyrus shared a tribute to her godmother on Instagram,a day after Parton died at 80 following a brief battle with cancer. She posted a black-and-white photo of the I Will Always Love You singer, sharing her thoughts on the heart-wrenching loss of her godmother.
“The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share,” the note commenced. “Our most sacred moments were private and they’ll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts.” She continued that she knows that the 80-year-old would want her to feel her emotions, write a song about it, and continue being strong.
Cyrus added, “I have an angel by my side. I always have. One of our last conversations was about music and metamorphosis.” She mentioned that she always loved the legendary singer and wanted to make her proud. “My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply. We’re in this loss together and we will see her in all of the most beautiful things,” the note concluded, mentioning Dolly Parton’s Instagram username.
The loss was particularly difficult for Cyrus because, during an earlier interview (via American Songwriter), she described how people who made her feel loved and safe were slowly growing older. She said, “I think the reason I’m so emotional is because as I get older, my dad gets older, my mom, she gets older.”
Cyrus also acknowledged that loss is part of life and said she felt grateful for the support of her family. She added, “I’ve been extremely blessed to have so much love within my family.”
