Mia Goth on her Scream Queen status - and why she doesn't understand it

Despite being branded a Scream Queen by the horror fanbase, actress Mia Goth doesn't understand the term's meaning.
On July 17, Goth - who celebrates her 33rd birthday on October 25 - achieved mainstream success after landing the role of Melantho in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster sword-and-sandal movie The Odyssey. Based on the ancient Greek epic poem, Melantho turned out to be the unfaithful maid in the household of the missing Odysseus and long-suffering wife, Penelope.
Goth landed on Hollywood's radar after starring in a trilogy of horror movies from the director of The House of the Devil, Ti West. This came after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake turned Jessica Biel into the "superior final girl."

Released on March 18, 2022, in the slasher horror film X, Goth appeared alongside other scream queens Jenna Ortega (Scream VI) and Brittany Snow (Prom Night), as well as Scott Mescudi, also known as rapper Kid Cudi. Audiences watched as Goth portrayed the dual role of aspiring adult-film star Maxine and the elderly antagonist Pearl.
In the follow-up, which served as a prequel, Pearl explored the origin story of its titular maniacal villain in 1918. In her starring role, Pearl played an aspiring young star eager to escape from her Texas farm. Released in September 16, 2022, Goth appeared in scenes with actor David Corenswet, who is now the current Superman.

In the final chapter of the trilogy, MaXXXine, the adult film star, continues to audition despite being traumatized by the events of X. Maxine lands her big mainstream break in a horror sequel called Puritan 2 while being stalked by a mysterious serial killer.
Fans took to Reddit to brand her as a talented actress who became famous and prominent in the horror genre.

One person said, "I have always thought about Mia Goth as the modern scream queen."
Another person added, "She's the best scream queen we've had in a long time."
A third wrote, "I would say Scream Emperor."

On July 5, 2024, Goth opened up about her modern-day status as a Scream Queen, despite not seeing herself as one.
“I don’t really know what a Scream Queen means. I never really use that term for other actresses. I’ve definitely heard it a lot in passing, and I know that sometimes they describe me like that, Goth told Collider. "I guess it just means an actress that’s working in the horror genre. It’s tricky. I don’t really know how to talk about that because, on one hand, I feel so embraced by the horror community and the genre community in general."
"And it’s something that I really welcome, and I’m really grateful for, that X and Pearl and MaXXXine, in particular, have resonated with people as much as they have," she continued.

"But then, on the other hand, I see myself as just an actor, and I happen to come across these roles that just so happened to exist in this genre. But when I’m working on the roles and preparing the roles and, really, in the scenes, too, I’m just kind of in my head.
"I’m just in, like, a family drama. Then it’s everything else that comes later with the edit and cut, and how they market it and all of that. It’s a tricky thing," she concluded.
