“Married at First Sight”’s Michelle Le, 34, Reveals She Had a Hysterectomy, Shares Surrogacy Plans (Exclusive)

Married at First Sight’s Michelle Le reveals to PEOPLE that she underwent a hysterectomy in May and can no longer carry her own children

Le says husband Cameron Mitchell was “really supportive through it all” and the couple plans to begin looking into surrogacy this fall

Mitchell says Le’s fertility challenges never made him “second-guess” their relationship as they share their hopes to start a family

Michelle Le is opening up about a major development in her journey to motherhood.

Throughout season 20 of Married at First Sight, Le was candid about her fertility journey, including her decision to freeze her eggs and the possibility that she could need another surgery to conceive.

Now, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE alongside husband Cameron Mitchell ahead of the Thursday, Aug. 27 finale and reunion, Le reveals that she underwent a hysterectomy earlier this year.

“I actually had the surgery back in May. I ended up needing a hysterectomy, so I was healing all through that month,” Le shares. “So I can’t carry my own children.”

Despite the unexpected turn in their family plans, Le says Mitchell was by her side throughout her recovery — and the couple is already looking toward their next chapter.

“Cameron was really supportive through it all, and we’re going to look into surrogacy in the fall,” she says. “We have no idea what that process entails, but it’s definitely something that we’re interested in and we want to go for. So we’re excited to start that process.”

Mitchell says learning about Le’s fertility challenges early in their relationship came as “a bit of a surprise,” but it never changed the way he felt about his wife.

“It was never something that made me second guess her... [or] us,” he tells PEOPLE. “I was more focused on finding love and finding my person.”

For Mitchell, building a family together was never dependent on doing it one particular way.

“There’s obviously a lot of different ways, I guess less conventional ways, of having a family,” he says. “And so it was really cool to just kind of hear Michelle’s story.”

The couple hopes to get the surrogacy process underway soon.

“We’re looking into surrogacy, hopefully start the process within the next few months because, you know, it can be a longer process and we want to get started and try to have a kid,” Mitchell shares.

Their plans for the future come after the pair knew surprisingly early in the Married at First Sight experiment that they had found something worth holding onto.

Mitchell says that after just “a couple weeks,” he knew he wanted to spend his life with Le.

“I was always certain I was going to say yes,” he recalls of approaching Decision Day. “It was honestly an easy decision at that point, and I didn’t have any doubts at all.”

Le felt just as confident.

“We knew probably maybe four weeks in that we were going to say yes on Decision Day,” she says. “So it was not a surprise for the two of us.”

Since filming, the couple has continued building their life together away from the cameras. Le even lived in Portland for about six months before temporarily returning to Seattle, where she is in the process of selling her condo and wrapping up her time in the city.

Their next destination? Northern California.

“Cameron just moved to the Bay Area in July,” Le reveals, adding that she expects to join him “in probably a few weeks.”

“So we’ll be done with this whole back-and-forth thing,” she says.

Mitchell describes their first year of marriage as one filled with travel, adventure and bringing their families together.

“Our marriage is really fun. It’s full of adventure,” he says. “We’ve been able to do some traveling. We’ve gone out of the country. We’ve, you know, obviously integrated our families that are very close now.”

“I’m having a blast really being with Michelle, but also still getting to know her and learning more about her because, you know, it has only been a year,” he adds. “So it’s been an amazing year.”

For Le, finding that kind of partnership after years of struggling with modern dating has made the unconventional way they met all the more meaningful.

“The dating apps were really tough,” she says. “And also being in the Pacific Northwest, especially Seattle, we have the Seattle Freeze, and so it’s really difficult to meet people out and about.”

“I’m in my 30s, and so the pool just gets smaller as you get older,” she continues. “And so it was really, really disheartening. And so that’s why I decided to get Married at First Sight, because I thought I needed help from some experts desperately.”

Now, Le says their experience is proof that taking an unexpected chance can pay off.

“It feels, I mean, really amazing, really special,” she says. “And it just really speaks towards, you should try new things, especially if you’re someone struggling in a relationship.”

“I think it really speaks towards how matchmaking can work,” she adds. “And a lot of therapy, too.”

The Married at First Sight season 20 finale and reunion can be streamed on Peacock beginning Thursday, Aug. 27.
