Jelly Roll broke down in tears while reflecting on a moment he wishes he had handled differently at the Grammys, saying he allowed his fear of being viewed as political to stop him from saying what was in his heart.
The country singer became emotional during his stint hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! as he addressed the intense speculation surrounding his political beliefs and explained why his reaction after winning his first Grammy Awards earlier this year continued to bother him.
"In February I won my first Grammy and somehow actually I won three of them," Jelly Roll said during the Thursday, August 28, episode. It comes after Jelly Roll turned on Donald Trump during his scathing monologue on Jimmy Kimmel.

He recalled being handed an award he had dreamed of receiving since childhood before suddenly finding himself expected to address a politically charged subject.

"It was the single greatest moment and the greatest honor of my career I got called on the stage, I got handed an award that I've been dreaming of as a child and immediately after, I was asked to make what I felt at the time was a political stance and I fumbled my words," he explained.

Jelly Roll said he does not regret initially wanting time to consider what he would say. Instead, he wishes he had found a way to express his beliefs without worrying about how they would be categorized.
He shared, "Looking back, I don't necessarily regret asking for more time before I spoke, I wish more people talk more time before they spoke, but I do wish I'd found the words to express my heart just a little bit sooner. But I was afraid that anything I was going to say was going to immediately be taken as a political statement."
The singer acknowledged that his effort to avoid being placed on one side of the political divide ultimately had the opposite effect, saying, "And ironically, by trying so hard not to make a political statement, I became one. I spent my entire career trying not to belong to a political party, partly because until March of this year, I wasn't even allowed to vote, but now I have that right, it's one I plan to exercise this coming November."

Jelly Roll said his focus has instead been on people whose struggles resemble those he has experienced personally, including those rebuilding their lives after addiction or criminal convictions.
As his remarks became increasingly personal, he began crying while discussing his late father and the lessons he learned from him about political disagreements.
He said his father, who died in 2019, was a Democrat while his uncle was a Republican, yet the two remained extremely close despite their political differences. It comes as Dolly's final wish, and the unusual manner in which she wants to be buried has been revealed.
