Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have been in a rumored feud for years. Although once affectionately known as the Fab Four, along with Prince Harry and Prince William, things seemingly went sour. Now, a new royal biography hints at why the Duchess of Sussex and the Princess of Wales allegedly fell out.

William & Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story is based on years of reporting and interviews with insiders close to the royals. In it, writer Russell Myers claims that Meghan and Kate’s relationship broke down over how the Sussexes handled palace staff in the years leading up to their departure from life as senior working royals.
“Catherine has always favored reason over conflict,” the royal journalist writes. “At first she had thought William and Harry’s squabbles were rooted in immaturity or stubbornness, on both sides.”
But, Russell claims that “Harry and Meghan’s attitude towards palace staff” set the Sussexes and the Waleses on “an entirely different course.”

Citing a source rumored to be close to the foursome, Russell says: “The whole atmosphere between them was pretty toxic.”
“Meghan was being bullish, Kate found her abrasive,” the book notes. That said, Kate is understood to have wanted a resolution between them. “There was definitely a hope from Catherine’s side that William could try and talk to Harry and settle things, but that didn’t exactly happen.”
Meghan and Kate’s rumored rift is not the only issue, however. There’s also plenty of speculation about William and Harry’s strained relationship. They have barely spent any time together in recent years, despite reports of olive branches sent back and forth.
