Kayla Garcia, President and CEO of Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, was named to the Colorado State University System Board of Governors to fill a vacancy created by a resignation. She is scheduled to be sworn in May 7 at the start of a two-day meeting at the CSU-Pueblo campus in Pueblo, Colo.
Kayla Garcia, President and CEO of Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, was named to the Colorado State University System Board of Governors to fill a vacancy.
Garcia, 37, was appointed by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and confirmed by the state legislature on April 27 to a term that expires Dec. 31, 2028, according to news releases from the governor’s office and CSU System. Garcia replaces Andrew Wirth, who resigned.
She is scheduled to be formally sworn in May 7 at the start of the Board of Governors’ two-day meeting at CSU-Pueblo, according to an agenda shared with the Coloradoan on May 5 by spokesperson Tiana Kennedy.
The CSU System Board of Governors makes policy for the university and oversees its main campus in Fort Collins, the Pueblo campus and CSU Global, which operates as an online campus.
Garcia is a CSU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and a certificate in corporate responsibility from the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business. She is originally from Pueblo and now lives in Lakewood, with her husband, Joseph, and two children, according to the CSU System news release.
“As someone who grew up in Pueblo and found opportunity through CSU, being a member of the Board of Governors of the CSU System is deeply meaningful to me,” Garcia said in the CSU System news release. “I’m grateful for the chance to help advance a university that creates pathways for students and strengthens communities across our state.”

Garcia was recognized by the Denver Business Journal as a 40 Under 40 honoree and an Outstanding Woman in Business and by ColoradoBiz magazine as one of Colorado’s Top 25 Most Influential Young People, the news release said.
Girls Inc. of Metro Denver is a $3.2 million organization that serves nearly 2,000 girls annually, with a stated mission of “to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold,” according to its website.
Prior to joining Girls Inc., Garcia served as the director of community affairs for Molson Coors Beverage Company and in leadership roles at Mile High United Way and Denver Inner City Parish. Garcia has also served on multiple community boards of directors and currently serves as board chair for the Denver Leadership Foundation and Downtown Denver Partnership and as a member of the President’s Community Cabinet for Metropolitan State University of Denver, according to the CSU System news release.
“Ms. Garcia has dedicated her career to strengthening communities and creating pathways for others to succeed,” John Fischer, chair of the Board of Governors, said in the news release. “That commitment aligns closely with CSU’s land-grant mission, and we look forward to welcoming her to the board and to having her perspective as part of our work.”
