Ed Sheeran and Martin Garrix kicked off wedding season by crashing a couple's reception.
The British singer-songwriter, 35, and the Dutch DJ, 30, surprised newlyweds Tessa Kindelin and Brendan Harty by showing up and performing a few songs at their wedding reception at Chicago's iconic Adler Planetarium on Saturday, June 27.
"It was the best night of our lives!" Tessa tells PEOPLE. "We feel so lucky, and we are so grateful to Martin and Ed for putting on the best performance we will ever see. Seeing not one, but two of our all-time favorite artists is a dream come true, but to have that at our wedding, surrounded by our closest family and friends, is something we will cherish forever."

The epic surprise was organized by the bride's brother, Mike Kindelin. The siblings are "huge fans" of Garrix, and Mike even took Tessa to her first EDM concert in high school.
Tessa explains that she and her husband knew that Sheeran and Garrix were both playing shows near their venue on their wedding night as part of Sheeran's LOOP Tour and Garrix's Americas Tour, and joked to Mike ahead of their big day that they should invite the musicians to stop by for a beer. Mike did his best to make it happen, sending Garrix a DM on Instagram.
Per a screenshot shared by Sheeran and Garrix in an Instagram reel recapping the surprise, Mike pointed out in his plea that the wedding was happening just "a few hundred feet" from Garrix's concert venue, Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island, and that it would be a small detour to stop by.
He wrote in part, "She is bummed she cannot make the show, so I was wondering if Martin could walk over to the planetarium for a 5 minute visit after his performance to congratulate my sister and perhaps mix in one song on the DJ decks."
To Mike's surprise, Garrix responded that he'd be happy to swing by.
"Mike told me Martin Garrix replied to his DM on the trolley on the way to the wedding ceremony," Tessa tells PEOPLE. "I was absolutely ecstatic, but I didn't want to get my hopes up too much, in case it didn't work out."
During the outdoor ceremony, wedding guests could hear bass from Garrix's concert.
After the ceremony, everyone headed inside for dinner and dancing as the band Rendezvous performed live. Just after midnight, guests were herded into Grainger Sky Theater with the promise of a surprise.
"We had hired a DJ, Eli, through Rendezvous, to play for us for the last hour of the reception," Tessa says. "Word had spread during the reception that Martin Garrix might be making an appearance, but most people didn't believe it."

Tessa remembers being pulled up to the front of the crowd on the dance floor as music began playing. She was "so nervous and excited" to see Garrix, but never expected Sheeran to be with him.
"I saw Martin first and I was over the moon. Then I looked to his right and saw Ed Sheeran singing," Tessa remembers. "It took me a long second to process that it was really him, and I think I just screamed. I was shocked. I had no idea that Ed Sheeran would be joining Martin."
She continues, "Mike suspected Ed might be joining, but he had made sure that part stayed a complete surprise to me. My husband Brendan and I are both huge fans of Ed Sheeran, and our guests went crazy."

The duo performed for about 10 minutes, starting with their new collaboration "Repeat It."
"It was incredible to watch them perform it live together, and the crowd absolutely loved it," Tessa says. "During the song, Ed came out toward the crowd to dance with us, and he gave me a huge hug. I couldn't believe it."
Next, Sheeran sang his slow song "Perfect."
"It was surreal to have Ed Sheeran sing one of the best love songs ever written to us live while my husband and I danced together," Tessa says. "And then Martin remixed it, and the crowd erupted."

The surprise concluded with Garrix playing his hit "In the Name of Love."
"It was so much fun dancing and singing along with my friends," Tessa tells PEOPLE. "Everyone had the best time."
